The Safety Net and Changing Accountants

Tuesday August 30, 2016

Dear Nettie @ The Safety Net

I have been given your details by a friend of mine as I think I need to change Accountants AGAIN – this is the third time in a year, it just seems that I can’t find someone who understands my requirements.

My friend told me I can have regular reviews with you and there is not an extra charge. Both my first accountant and the one I have now answer all my questions, but I just feel like I am paying all the time for information. Recently I have started just googling what I need to know – but not sure this is the answer long term – I’d be interested in talking to you

Best regards Tilly

Dear Tilly

Thanks for the email

It is never a good sign when businesses are regularly changing Accountants especially when it seems that in both cases the problem seems to be that you need information in order to function as a business.

There is nothing wrong in principle in googling for information BUT it has to come with caution, as although general information is fine, specifics are unlikely to be answered this way.

Your friend is quite right, on most of our accounting packages there is a quarterly review included in the fees, and also you have unlimited accounting and tax advice available to you – HOWEVER the key thing here is to talk to your accountant and get advice BEFORE undertaking certain decisions, even if it is just to ‘run it past someone else’.

For example, it could be that you want to understand the true cost of employing staff, or how to structure the company or maybe you are thinking of an investor and want to know what seems reasonable – all of these could be googled, however they will not necessarily give you all the specific details that you need.

I am assuming from your comment above that you have been trading around a year, and this may be a good time for us to start talking.

Can I suggest that you take a look at our pricing on http://www.riftaccounting.com/prices/ and we can of course discuss a package, which would best suit your business.

The key to this though is that constantly changing accountants is not the answer and distracts from the important thing which is running and growing your business and I don’t think it is wrong to think that your accountant should be available to help with you this.

Please let me know some convenient dates and times to talk soon

Best regards Nettie
