The Safety Net and the Committee Chair

Friday July 29, 2016

Hi Nettie @The Safety Net

I appreciate that we know each other through networking and mutual contacts but I really wanted your advice on how to tackle a situation I have found myself in.

To raise my profile I became an active part of an established networking group outside of Kent and have invested a considerable amount of my time into helping to modernise it and attract more business owners to events for everyone’s benefit

I have always been vocal that I was looking to be part of the main committee of the group going forward and knew that the current committee leader was looking to retire.

You can imagine my disappointment in finding that someone who occasionally attended the events has been approached and accepted the job of the committee leader, it seems behind closed doors.

To say I am disappointed is an understatement, I am both upset about who has been ‘given’ the job and how it has all come about and have written to the outgoing Leader to withdraw my support – I haven’t sent it yet, but really want to and would appreciate your advice.

Apologies for the rant, but it’s how I feel – May

Hi May

Think this is one of those moments when it is best to be a pro…..

I know and appreciate that you have put a lot of time into this networking group and I am sure that has been appreciated by them.

Do you know who has got the job and do you know why they were approached and selected?

Did you actually want to be the committee leader or part of the leadership team? – if it was the latter then this could be a good time to engage with the new leader and express your desire to help them in their new role and explain what you have been doing.

You could also talk to the outgoing leader and ask them to explain to you the selection criteria for future positions that may be available.

If you feel that no longer being part of this group after undertaking the actions above is right for you, at least you know you are leaving having made a considered decision, and it will feel less like a rant and will possibly have more of an impact.

As you know I am a fan of Dr Seuss and this quote springs to mind ‘Sometimes the questions are complicated and the answers are simple’

Hope this helps and please let me know what you decide to do

Have a good week – Nettie
